Your AC system has a huge impact on not only the comfort of your home but your energy use as well! In North Central Florida, you need the most efficient choice to keep your home cool all summer long.
If you’ve been doing your research, you’ve probably learned that there are a lot of options when it comes to choosing your AC unit and that ductless AC has become increasingly popular. But, which solution is right for you? We have a few things for you to consider, but first, let’s explore what ductless AC is all about.
What is Ductless AC?
A ductless mini-split system is a form of air conditioning that doesn’t require ductwork in your home and is becoming more popular due to their easy installation and energy efficiency!
The system has two parts: an outside compressor and indoor unit. An outside compressor can be affixed to your home either like a traditional AC unit or can be attached to a roof or terrace. The second part is an indoor unit, also known as the evaporator. These are connected by connecting lines through the wall.
Ductless AC can prove many advantages over the traditional central AC systems. But, like most things, there’s a time and place for them depending on your needs and preferences. Here are some things to consider when deciding which AC system is right for you.
Things to Consider When Making Your Decision
There are two kinds of ductless systems: single-zone systems and multi-zone systems. The great thing about ductless systems are that they can be put anywhere! Unlike traditional room AC units, they don’t need to be put in a window. They can rest on the floor, the ceiling, or a wall.
Additionally, if there are rooms in your home that simply get warmer than other areas, or if you’re constantly in disagreement with family members on temperature comfort, ductless AC may be the right option for you. Central AC units can do individual zoning, however, it is usually more cost effective to go with ductless for this specific need.
That said, some ductless systems cannot cool the entire home. A central AC system will keep your entire home cool simultaneously and will be out of sight. There are many efficient options for central AC that reduce indoor humidity and can add a lot of value to your home.
While both kinds of systems will require some routine maintenance, ductless mini-splits will not require any seasonal ductwork or duct cleaning. Indoor pollutants like mold, dust, pollen, and bacteria normally build up in your ductwork with a central AC unit. These don’t accumulate in ductless systems, so the filters can pick up more pollutants.
Importantly, no matter which AC system you have, you should replace air filters once a month and have your units maintenanced by a professional HVAC contractor twice per year.
Because mini-split systems do not require any ductwork, they are much easier to install than central AC units. For old homes or buildings with thick walls, it’s much less of a hassle to get a mini-split system than to install a central AC unit.
Because they can be placed anywhere, they make a great AC solution for repurposed garages, home add-ons, and attics. Ductless mini-splits are also much less noisy than a central AC system or window air conditioner, which may be important to you.
There are energy efficient options for both kinds of AC systems and each one has their own advantages. When comparing ductless mini-splits to central AC systems, ductless AC is overall more energy efficient.
With ductless AC, each room in your home can have its own mini-split and therefore their own cooling setting, you have the flexibility to turn off the AC in rooms that are not being used. This can save homes and businesses a lot in energy use and utility bills.
On average, a customer with an Energy Star rated mini-split system can save close to 30% on his or her energy bills.
